Latin Name Dicksonia lanata
Common Name lanata
A New Zealand native fern that comes in two types - a trunked form and a prostrate form. The former we have - it is quite rare, difficult to grow and is frost sensitive and as a tree fern only gets to about 2 metre trunk. It is a very nice tree fern needing reasonable shade and away from strong winds.
The prostate type is a ground creeping fern - its even found in Scotland would you believe!!? Its difficult to find and hard to transplant - Waikaremoana area has this we understand.
