Platycerium bifurcatum - Staghorn

Common Name staghorn

Staghorn as it is commonly called - an epiphytic fern that grows succesfully on ponga or trees feeding from the bark and decaying matter they may trap in their leaves. Very drought hardy so do not overwater (but do not just leave to dry out either!!)

In New Zealand they are frost tender so in winter put a frost cloth over them.

They can get to quite large size and produce by young plantlets shooting off from the parent. They also produce spore under the frond and this is the light brown almost like leather to look at you will see at certain times of the year.

Please note the picture shown is of a mature plant - what we sell is a single fronded fern.
